The alarm arrives long before the view. At first there is only cold air, loose volcanic ground and the small circle of your headlamp.
Rinjani begins in darkness for many climbers. The summit ridge is still invisible, and the only honest measure of progress is the next careful step.
There is a temptation to rush because sunrise feels like a deadline. It is not. A safe pace, warm layers and attention to the people around you matter more than reaching the perfect photograph.
When the crater appears
The first colour does not reveal everything at once. It catches the edge of the caldera, then the lake, then the long island falling away below you. The mountain is assembled slowly by light.
That gradual reveal is the part worth recording. Not only the summit time, but the moment the landscape stopped being an idea and became the place beneath your feet.
Some summits arrive as a victory. Rinjani arrived as light.
A note for the Passport
Record the start time, the wind on the ridge, who shared the last steps and what you saw first when the sun appeared. Add the route and conditions while they are still fresh.
The vial does not prove the climb. It simply gives that memory a place to return to.
